Derwentside College is very proud to have recently (October 2022) been rated as ‘Good’ in all areas of our provision.  The Ofsted inspection highlighted what a fantastic team we have here at the College.  We are now focussing on what needs to happen next on our journey to become an outstanding College.  The inspection was very useful in identifying what we need to do to achieve this and we’re looking forward to taking this agenda forward.  Here's some of what the inspectors said:

“Leaders and managers promote positive values and a supportive and inclusive culture throughout the college. Staff enjoy working at the college and are well supported by leaders and managers to do well in their job roles. As a result, there is low staff attrition, with staff typically staying in employment at the college for a long time.”

“Staff benefit from a useful induction process that ensures that they understand their roles and are appropriately supported and challenged. As a result, they feel committed to the college and its vision and aims from the start of their employment. Leaders and managers ensure that staff continue to improve and enhance their pedagogical skills and their industry knowledge. Staff access a wide range of professional development opportunities, including five ‘back to industry’ days a year, to maintain occupational competence.”

In May 2022, for the first time, Derwentside College participated in a staff survey in partnership with other colleges.  This allowed us to benchmark our results against other colleges and in doing this, we achieved some outstanding results:

Overall, we were the top performing College within the group of 45 Colleges, coming 1st in four (Management style, Customers, College, General) out of the six categories, and 2nd in the other two (Communication and Me).

  • 98% of our staff said they were proud to work at the college.
  • 100% of staff were aware the College has policies and procedures that support their rights and responsibilities.
  • 98% of staff said that safeguarding arrangements were effective at the College.
  • 98% of staff said students are supported to develop positive attitudes to learning and work.
  • 98% of staff said they had the authority to do a good job. 
  • 98% of staff said the College is well led and managed. 
  • 98% of staff said the College has a good future.
  • 98% of staff said that they understand their role and the contribution they make to the goals of the college.
  • 97% of staff said their line manager gives them the support they need to do their job effectively. 

We are currently participating in this survey again in 2023 and will share the results when available.
