Wednesday 17 June 2026
Derwentside College student Jaiden Buchan has been awarded a £500 bursary through the CECA North East College Bursary Programme 2026.
The programme recognises one outstanding student from each of five regional colleges studying civil engineering or a related discipline. Jaiden was selected following a competitive application and interview process, where he stood out for his confidence, maturity, and ambition.
During the interview, Jaiden demonstrated a strong understanding of his course and a clear commitment to developing his skills. He has also gained additional experience in his own time, working with a roofing contractor to build his practical knowledge and customer communication skills.
Jaiden impressed the panel with his initiative, including researching apprenticeship opportunities and visiting live construction sites. He has clear aspirations to progress into a site management role or establish his own groundworks company.
His positive mindset and determination to challenge stereotypes about young people in the industry were also highlighted. The panel described him as “calm, measured, and highly motivated,” with the potential to become a valuable asset to the sector.
Nicola Raine, Assistant Principal said: “We are delighted to see Jaiden recognised with this award. His dedication and ambition make him a fantastic ambassador for Derwentside College.”
Congratulations to Jaiden on this well-deserved achievement.
