DERWENTSIDE COLLEGE AND GATESHEAD HEALTH NHS FOUNDATION TRUST FORMALISE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Friday

Derwentside College and Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust have strengthened their commitment to developing the NHS workforce of the future through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

The agreement was signed by Amanda Venner, Director of People at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, and Nicola Raine, Assistant Principal at Derwentside College, formalising a successful partnership focused on creating career opportunities for local people while addressing workforce needs across the health and care sector.

The partnership brings together education and industry to develop high-quality training, apprenticeships and workforce development programmes that provide clear routes into NHS careers. By aligning learning with real workforce demand, both organisations are helping individuals gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed to secure sustainable employment and progress within healthcare.

The collaboration has already delivered impactful initiatives, including bespoke leadership and communication development programmes for NHS staff and innovative Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship pathways. These programmes enable individuals to earn while they learn, gain valuable workplace experience and build rewarding careers within the NHS.

Nicola Raine, Assistant Principal for Business Development & Technical Education at Derwentside College, said: "Strong partnerships are essential if we are to develop the skilled workforce our region needs. By working closely with Gateshead Health, we can ensure our curriculum reflects the realities of the workplace and provides clear, accessible routes into employment. Together, we are creating opportunities for local people whilst helping to build a sustainable NHS workforce for the future."

Amanda Venner, Director of People at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Investing in people is critical to the future success of the NHS. Our partnership with Derwentside College is helping us attract, develop and retain talented individuals from our local communities. By working together, we are creating opportunities that benefit individuals, strengthen our workforce and ultimately support the delivery of high-quality care for our patients."

The signing of the MoU reflects a shared commitment to supporting social mobility, strengthening local communities and ensuring that the NHS has access to a skilled, confident and future-ready workforce. Through continued collaboration, Derwentside College and Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust will work together to create life-changing opportunities for local people and support the long-term sustainability of healthcare services across the region.
