Certificate in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings

The Level 1 qualification is aimed at learners considering acareer in health and/or social care with adults or children and young people.You will develop knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in thesesectors and the roles played by workers – from principles and values through tohealth and safety and working with others.

On completing the qualification, you will be able to pursuea career in the sector or you can progress to other level 2 qualifications suchas the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Units you will study include:

  • Understand the range of service provision and roles withinhealth and social care (adults and children and young people), early years andchildcare

  • Understand the principles and values in health and socialcare (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare

  • Awareness of protection and safeguarding in health andsocial care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare

  • Introduction to communication in health and social care(adults and children and young people), early years and childcare

  • Introductory awareness of equality and inclusion in health,social care and children’s and young people’s settings

  • Introductory awareness of health and safety in health,social care and children’s and young people’s settings

  • Introductoryawareness of person-centred support in health, social care and children’s andyoung people’s settings

There are no formal entry requirements but learners should show an interest in progressing onto a care related career.

A range of learning methods will be adopted to meet the diverse needs of the learners.

All units will be internally assessed using a range ofmethods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing aleaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board. Thequalifications will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria for thechosen units must be achieved in order to obtain an overall pass grade. 


This will depend on the individual learner's abilities, and could include a Level 2 qualification

These qualifications do not provide a licence to practise, but may support progression into a wide range of job roles in the Health and Social Care sector, including:

  • care support workers in adult residential settings
  • healthcare assistants in community, primary care and acute health environments
  • care support workers in domiciliary services, supported living or day services
  • community-based support workers

Full Time provision for 16-18 year olds is FREE.
Learners aged 19+ studying their first Level 3, the course fee is FREE.
Learners aged 19+ studying a second Level 3 qualification and learners aged 24+ studying at Level 3 can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to fund course fees.  You can discuss this further at your college interview.
