Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations

This qualification is designed for learners who want to use and understand advanced manufacturing technologies and techniques to promote themselves for further study or for job applications.


The object of this qualification is to introduce learners to the skills and requirements needed to work as an engineer. It will include practical skills and technical knowledge completing assessments in areas such as machining, fabrication, electrical wiring and CAD. The programme will contain some more advanced projects that will look at how to build and fly rockets, how to build some objects to go into those rockets, such as microsatellites. They will explore artificial intelligence, and look at the issues surrounding the making and use of unmanned vehicles.

Who is this qualification for?
  • Learners who are not working in an engineering or manufacturing environment (but may wish to do so)
  • Learners who wish to progress their skills and abilities that will lead them onto a level 3 apprenticeship
  • Those who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills in advanced manufacturing and engineering

Learners must be at least 16 years old. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.  However, learners must have the potential to achieve all aspects of the qualification.  In particular, learners should be able to demonstrate that they have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy required for the completion of the learning outcomes and the assessments. Progression from successfully completing a level one advanced manufacturing technologies programme, minimum grades of 3 (D) in maths and English. 

The course will consist of lectures, practical demonstrations and opportunities for learners to develop their theoretical and practical skills with assessments and tasks. 

The assessment involves on-screen examinations, practical assessments and theory assignments.
The qualification overall will be graded 40% by coursework and 60% by external examination using the P/M/D/D* grading system. 

This would allow progression from level 2 to Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing and then on to: Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering apprenticeships. 

Opportunities for Apprenticeships as Engineering Technician, Maintenance and Operations Technicians, Engineering Operatives, Manufacturing and Design Engineering.

Full Time provision for 16-18 year olds is FREE.
Learners aged 19+ studying their first Level 3, the course fee is FREE.
Learners aged 19+ studying a second Level 3 qualification and learners aged 24+ studying at Level 3 can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to fund course fees.  You can discuss this further at your college interview.
