BTEC National Award/Certificate in Sport (Sport Development and Fitness)

Why should I study BTEC National Award/Certificate in Sport (Sport Development and Fitness)?

This is a two-year course aimed at able sports performers, and those interested in working in a sports environment.

  • It is suitable for those who wish to improve their own sport performance, work in sports development, coaching and leadership, or work in the health and fitness industry.
  • It is also suitable for those wishing to work in people oriented jobs, eg, police; fire service.
  • It will allow you to study an AS course alongside.
  • You will have the opportunity to gain additional sport related qualifications.

What will be studied on the course?

Over the two years you will study 12 units; six each year. Include information on subjects, topics, additional units, enrichment.

Units include:

  • instructing physical activity and exercise,
  • sports injuries,
  • health and safety related to sport,
  • effects of body to exercise,
  • sports performance,
  • fitness testing and training,
  • sports development,
  • sport coaching, leadership in sport, and working with children.

In addition your programme will include:

  • H&S and First Aid awards,
  • CSLA - sports leaders award (Level 2)
  • Higher Award - sports leaders award(Level 3)
  • NCFE L2 Certificate in Sports Coaching

Working alongside local Sports Development teams is an important part of the programme. This gives you the opportunity to help with planning and delivering events, working with local groups in the community, and gaining skills and knowledge required to help further your sport careers.

When does the course start and how long does it last?

This is a two year course which starts in September.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs at A-C's, to include English, and Maths or Science at C grade
  • Or BTec 1st Diploma Sport at Merit grade, and achievement at Level 1 in Key Skills

Where is the course based?

Mainly at the Consett campus, however, we also make use of Belle Vue Sports Centre and Swim Centre.

How will the learner be assessed?

Over two years, by internally set assignments, some of which includes practical assessment.

How much will the course cost?

You will need appropriate sports clothing for both indoor and outdoor use, you will also need to purchase a whistle for coaching purposes. You may need to contribute towards visits.

What progression routes are available?

On successful completion students could progress to:

  • Higher Education BA/BSc courses for teaching; sports development; sports coaching; sport and leisure management
  • Direct to work in fitness gyms, sports centres, private sports facilities
