BTEC Introductory Diploma in Sport and Leisure

Why should I study BTEC Introductory Diploma in Sport and Leisure?

This is a one-year course aimed at those with an interest in Sport and Leisure and those interested in working in a sports environment. It will give you a basic understanding and help you progress to higher level courses.

  • It is suitable for those who wish to improve their own sport performance, work in sports development, coaching and leadership, or work in the health and fitness industry.
  • It is suitable for those wishing to work in people oriented jobs, eg, police; fire service.
  • You will have the opportunity to gain additional sport related qualifications.

What will be studied on the course?

Over the one year you will study 8 units; You will study:

Three core units:

  • starting work in sport and leisure
  • working in sport and leisure
  • the healthy body

Two from the following Personal Skills units:

  • personal effectiveness
  • social responsibility at work
  • financial management

and three from the following Optional units:

  • organising a sport or leisure event
  • issues in sport and leisure
  • taking part in sport
  • introducing customer service

When does the course start and how long does it last?

This is a one year course which starts in September.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

You will need GCSE's at Grades E/F. An interest in Sport and Recreation and a desire to work in the industry is necessary.

Where is the course based?

Mainly at the Consett campus, however, we also make use of Belle Vue Sports Centre and Swim Centre.

How will the learner be assessed?

There is an externally set project assessment for two of the core units. The core and optional units are graded. Personal Skills are pass or fail. Some assessments will be written whilst others are more practical.

How much will the course cost?

You will need appropriate sports clothing for both indoor and outdoor use, you will also need to purchase a whistle for coaching purposes. You may need to contribute towards visits.

What progression routes are available?

On successful completion students could progress to:

  • BTEC First Diploma in Sport or another Level 2 programme
