AS Level Chemistry

Why should I study AS Level Chemistry?

To gain an understanding of how Chemistry influences our lives - from applications in industry and medicine to advances in technology and forensics. There will also be opportunities to develop practical skills.

The course will enable students to

  • Progress to study A2 Chemistry
  • Study other chemistry-related courses
  • Enter Science or Chemistry based employment

What will be studied on the course?

Students will study 3 units:

  • Unit 1: Foundation chemistry
  • Unit 2: Chemistry in Action
  • Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills

When does the course start and how long does it last?

The course starts in September and will finish in June

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

Learners are expected to have a minimum of the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Maths, English and Dual Award Science
  • Grade C or above in Science at Higher Tier

Where is the course based?

This will be held at our Consett campus

How will the learner be assessed?

Unit 1 (33%) will be assessed by a written examination (75min)
Unit 2 (46%) will be assessed by a written examination (105min)
Unit 3 assessment (20%) comprises three parts:

  • Centre-Assessed Unit
  • Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA)
  • Practical Skills Assessment (PSA)

How much will the course cost?

Textbooks are available from LRC free of charge. All safety equipment and lab coats are provided by the department. You may be asked to cover costs of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course.

What progression routes are available?

Successful completion of an AS level in Chemistry may lead to:

  • Continue and do a full A level in Chemistry - see information available
  • Entry onto Foundation University Courses
  • Science based employment
