AS Level Physics
Why should I study AS Level Physics?
Physics is a wide and diverse field of expertise. On this course you will study physical phenomena, encompassing centuries of research. Topics range from traditional studies in electricity to developing field such as particle physics, satellite and fibre-optic communication. On completion of the course, learners can progress
- to study A2 Physics
- to study other academic and practical courses including engineering
What will be studied on the course?
Unit 1
This unit contains basic electricity work, circuit theory,
resistivity and conduction mechanisms. It also includes more modern
physics including the study of the classification of particles and a
brief look at wave - particle duality.
Unit 2
This unit contains mechanics topics including scales and vector
quantities forces, motion, friction, projectiles and investigation
of the built properties of solids. It also includes waived topics
such as reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference.
Unit 3
This is a practical based unit.
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
- A minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Maths, English and Dual Award Science
- Grades A or B in GCSE higher level Dual Award Science and Maths
- Good practical skills
Where is the course based?
The course is based at the Consett site
How will the learner be assessed?
Units 1 and 2 assessed by 2 x 1¼ hour written exams.
Unit 3 is assessed by a practical activity followed by a written
exam.
How much will the course cost?
All text books available from LRC free of charge. Lab coats and other safety equipment provided by the Department
