AS Level Mathematics
Why should I study AS Level Mathematics?
Studying AS Maths will provide the learner with increased problem solving skills and enable the learner to acquire more knowledge about Mathematical concepts and techniques. It is a challenging subject which will improve powers of logical thought. It will enable the learner to progress to:
- study A2 Mathematics
- study other subjects where Mathematical skills are used i.e. Sciences, Engineering, Psychology, Geography etc.
What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study 3 units which are
- C1: Pure Mathematics 1 A Maths unit which extends the algebraic skills learnt at GCSE. It includes algebra and functions, quadratic functions, equations and inequalities, sketching curves, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, differentiation and integration.
- C2: Pure Mathematics 2 This unit builds on the skills acquired in the C1 unit. It includes algebra and functions, the sine and cosine rule, exponentials and logarithms, coordinate geometry, binomial expansions, radians, geometric sequences and series, graphs of trig, functions, differentiation, integration and trig, equations.
- S1: Statistics 1 This unit builds on the skills already learnt at GCSE. It includes representation of data, measures of central tendency and measures of spread, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables and the Normal distribution.
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
- A minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Maths and English
- A grade B or above at Higher Level GCSE Maths
- Good algebraic skills.
Where is the course based?
At our Lanchester Sixth Form Centre.
How will the learner be assessed?
The course is assessed by 3 x 1½ hr externally assessed exams, normally taken in May / June.
How much will the course cost?
