AS Level English Language and Literature

Why should I study AS Level English Language and Literature?

This course offers an accessible and lively approach to the study of English. Developed in consultation with teachers and professional organisations, the combined AS English Language and Literature offers new and exciting approaches to the teaching and learning of English, meeting the differing needs of a range of student abilities.

What will be studied on the course?

Simply put, language and literature. But it's so much more than that. It's about you having the opportunity to really appreciate language as a tool and a medium by taking on the challenge of reshaping, remaking or restyling someone else's work.

Unit 1 - the exam bit

We use the exam board's specially produced text book and the heart-rending short novel Address Unknown as the basis for a thorough investigation into how language works, particularly in terms of talk.

Unit 2 - the creative bit: coursework

Three nightmare worlds are explored, including the movie The Children of Men. From our explorations of a novel, a stage play and a film you will undertake the fascinating tasks of constructing sequels, prequels, 'paraquels' and other remake possibilities. These you will submit as your coursework.

When does the course start and how long does it last?

Begins in September, finishes June.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

You must have five GCSE passes at C or above, including English studied at Higher Tier.

Where is the course based?

At our Lanchester Sixth Form Centre

How will the learner be assessed?

The course will be assessed via coursework and a two hour exam.

How much will the course cost?

Essential books are provided on loan. Any visits will be charged.

What progression routes are available?

You can go on to A2 and so complete your study at A level. If you prefer, you can just take to AS year.
