Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering
Why should I study an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering?
This course will provide learners with the practical skills and related knowledge to enable them to progress into an Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship in either:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Fabrication & Welding Engineering
- Computer Aided Design
What will be studied on the course?
Learners will need to complete a framework of qualifications which include:
Performing Engineering Operations NVQ Level 2
Technical Certificate (Advanced Diploma or National Certificate)
Key Skills Level 2 in Application of Number, Communication, ICT,
Improving Own Learning and Performance and Working With Others
ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities)
NVQ Level 3 in specific skill areas
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts on successful completion of an Apprenticeship or achievement of the other listed entry requirements. An Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering will normally last 3 to 4 years.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
You will need to have:
- 5 GCSE’s Grade C or above including Maths or Science and English
- A PEO Level 2 in Engineering
- A BTEC 1st Diploma in Engineering
- Completion of an Apprenticeship in Engineering
- Plus successful completion of the Apprenticeship Initial Assessment
Where is the course based?
The course is based at the Centre of Engineering Enterprise at our Consett campus. The Level 3 NVQ is completed in the workplace.
How will the learner be assessed?
The NVQ 3 will be assessed through practical work completed during employment and the completion of underpinning knowledge questions. The learner must complete a portfolio of evidence. The Technical Certificate will be assessed by course assignments and projects, and the key skills via tests and/or portfolio of evidence. The ERR is completed during the course induction period.
How much will the course cost?
Learners will be provided with personal protective equipment (proban overalls and safety boots). Lockers are available to all apprentices to keep their PPE safe. A lock is provided on receipt of a £1.00 refundable deposit.
Advanced Apprentices who have completed the off-the-job Apprenticeship programme first will only attend College for 1 day per week (September to July) for completion of the Technical Certificate.
What progression routes are available?
On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship Technical Certificate, learners could progress onto the Higher National Certificate or a Foundation Degree in Engineering.
